IN KEEPING WITH MYSELF

WHAT IS AGENCY IN SELF-PORTRAITURE?

In portraiture, “agency” can be used to describe the relationship between the artists’ creative direction and the voice of the subject sitting in front of the camera.

In self-portraiture, artists take their work through delicately crafted and intentionally nuanced creative processes. They have full control over how they look and how they choose to be represented, thus allowing their voices to be heard above all else

It is within the details of what they specifically choose to include, and exclude, in their final output that we find clues to the artists’ intangible, unknowable and constantly changing expressions.
