IN KEEPING WITH MYSELF

PEERING INTO CREATED SPACES

The artists in this exhibition invite us to peer into their created spaces, which they have meticulously carved out from the pressures of contemporary society. By illuminating these hidden crevices, they are able to come to terms with their own personal struggles. These spaces highlight how it’s possible to grow as an individual and they present room for growth as a nation in critical need of uncovering its hidden spaces.

As viewers, we may identify with the stories in these artworks, seeing the artist’s lens mirror representations of ourselves. Or perhaps we interpret the artist’s lens as a mediator who guides us towards seeing and understanding another person’s struggle. In either instance, the exhibition doesn’t allow us, as viewers, full access into the minds of the artists, but, rather, it helps us to uncover the process of self-discovery.

As we experience the exhibition, we may find ourselves asking: What space is there for me?
